How to make kinetic sand at home
Making kinetic sand at home is not only fun, but also a hands-on science activity for kids. By making their own kinetic sand, children will gain many math skills in addition to fine motor skills.

Kinetic sand recipe with 2 ingredients
This easy kinetic sand recipe only requires two ingredients and is super quick and easy to make.
What you will need to make kinetic sand at home:
- transparent sludge
- fine sand
- big bin
How to do it:
Step 1: Add 1 tbsp. clean slime into a bucket.
Step 2: Pour 1 cup of sand into the slime and mix well. You may need to add more sand so that it is no longer sticky and molds easily. If it’s too dry, add a little more slime to get the desired texture.
That’s it! Your classic kinetic sand is ready!

Do-it-yourself kinetic sand without slime
If you want to make slime-free kinetic sand, here’s a simple recipe. It is ideal for older children who can measure and mix on their own. If you are trying this with small children, adult help is recommended.
An ingredient for making slime-free kinetic sand
1 cup fine play sand – easily available at craft stores
1 tbsp. Cornstarch
1 tbsp. Water
1 tsp Dish soap
1/4 teaspoon. Coloring (optional)
2 mixing bowls

There are several ways to make kinetic sand at home. While we used dish soap and water, some recipes use liquid starch and even slime. Feel free to try other recipes as well.
DIY kinetic sand recipe tips
● Sand – You can make your kinetic sand from any type of sand. Regular sand from the hardware store or fine beach sand are both fine.
You can use colored sand instead of fine beach sand if you want to add bright colors to the sensory experience. Whichever sand you choose, make sure the sand is completely dry before you start.
● Cornstarch – Cornstarch is highly recommended due to its silkiness. As a last resort, you can replace it with flour instead of cornstarch.
● Dye – Avoid food dyes as they can stain your hands. Use a high-quality paint dye instead, but for the edible version, you must use food coloring.
● Dish soap – be sure to use a good quality dish soap and avoid regular liquid hand soap.
Is kinetic sand toxic?
Our recipe is non-toxic, although it is still not edible or safe to taste because it uses sand. Adult supervision is recommended to prevent ingestion of kinetic sand.

Edible kinetic sand recipe
Like the traditional recipe, the edible version is also easy to make and a lot of fun to play with. This is a great addition to the sensory bins and is sure to delight your preschooler.
This is the safe version, but we still recommend adult supervision while your young children play with it.
Edible kinetic sand recipe ingredients
● 1 cup of baking soda
● 1/2 cup of sugar
● 1/2 cup cornstarch
● 1 tbsp. Cream of tartar
● 1/4 cup of water
● Food coloring – optional
How to make edible kinetic sand
Step 1 : Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl (baking soda + sugar + cornstarch + cream of tartar)
Step 2 : In a separate bowl/container, mix the water with the food coloring of your choice.
Step 3: Now, while mixing the bowl with the dry ingredients, continue to add the water and food coloring a little at a time until you reach the desired consistency.
The above ingredients should yield about a handful of kinetic sand, but if you want to scale up, you can use a 2:1:1 ratio of baking soda, sugar, and cornstarch.
By using proportions, even if you use a cup, ladle or any other container, you can still get the mixture right!
Depending on the consistency you like, add more or less tartar and water than listed above. Let your children control the cooking process.
Let them choose colors, measure ingredients, mix, decide what to add to get the right consistency, and more.
These little things they do will help them develop skills that will help them with more difficult tasks in the future!
