Coin Structures – Fun Tower Building Activity For Kids

Coin Structures is an easy tower building activity for kids that is new and incredibly fun. While most building tasks for kids involve items you need to buy from the supermarket, this one has everything you need at home – coins!

Lots of coins are all you need for this exciting coin tower fun for kids. And, of course, creativity and patience.

What we love about this fun STEM activity for kids at home is that it doesn’t require any setup and is perfect for kids of all ages 5 and up. Although younger children can do this too, they will need help and supervision.

Creation of coin structures for children

A great way to work on creativity, fine motor skills, visual-spatial skills along with observation and patience. Building coin structures is a great way to introduce children to the world of construction.

1. Coin tower

This is the simplest building activity for kids that will warm them up to more complex structures.

Start by simply stacking coins on top of each other to build the longest coin tower. Make it a fun competition between the kids if you’re working in the classroom or if they work together to build the tallest coin tower in a minute without tipping over!

2. Leaning Tower of Pisa

It’s always more fun if you can combine activities from different disciplines. We’ve combined this engineering activity for kids with world geography and history to teach them about famous monuments and landmarks.

Start with a picture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and discuss with your children how they can make it using coins.

To make our Leaning Tower of Pisa, we came up with the idea of ​​sliding the coins with a small gap on top of each other to create a structure of the coin leaning on one side, just like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

This model will explore the principles of gravity, weight and balance, making it the perfect STEM activity for kids.

If you are working with students, make it a group activity by dividing students into teams and encouraging them to brainstorm. Brainstorming is great for kids because it helps them explore different ideas and test their viability.

3. Roman Colosseum

How about building the Roman Colosseum with coins? This massive amphitheater, built of stone, was intended for games. As part of our building activities for school children, we decided to make this iconic Roman building using coins.

We made the pillars with coins and then connected them at the top to resemble an ancient wonder.

4. Arch bridge

If your kids or students are learning about bridges, this is one of the STEM craft activities they should do. This easy construction activity for kids is sure to give your budding young engineers a hands-on lesson in building their own arch bridge.

5. The Eiffel Tower

Here is another historical landmark that attracts millions of visitors every year. It was great fun reading about the Eiffel Tower with the kids, and it’s no wonder they were all excited to create their own versions of the landmark.

To make the exercise more inclusive, encourage the children to describe the Eiffel Tower with one example and find its synonym in French.

6. Sacre Coeur Basilica

Since we have already discussed the Persian landmark, we decided to try our hand at a more complex structure – the Sacre Coeur Basilica.

Such construction tasks for children really expand their minds and imaginations, as well as stimulate their creativity. We recommend this as a group activity to promote collaboration.

7. Christ the Savior

The last construction event for children in our structure was a real challenge! Perfect for elementary and middle school, this building challenge will challenge kids to think outside the box and create their own version of a Brazilian landmark.

Building landmarks is a great way to learn STEM skills while absorbing history. Such classes allow students who shy away from conventional STEM or construction classes, but are interested in world history, to participate and find a common point of interest.
